Being single on Valentine’s Day can be difficult. Everywhere you go, you see stores filled with boxes of chocolates, cute little teddy bears, pretty flowers, and heartfelt greeting cards. Instead of allowing this to make you feel lonely, it’s time to embrace your singleness. Just because you don’t have a significant other, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate love. This year it’s just more about self-love―the most important love of all.

To help you avoid feeling down about being single on Valentine’s Day, here are 5 things you should and shouldn’t do:

1. Avoid social media

If you’re recovering from a broken heart or feeling lonely, it’s best to take a break from social media on Valentine’s Day. You’re bound to see endless posts of happy couples, engagement announcements, and photos of flowers and gifts. This will sting more if you’re not emotionally prepared for this.

2. Don’t make plans with an ex just to avoid being alone

You may be tempted to spend this day with an ex, but really think about why you’re considering it. Maybe you want to try to bring the spark back to an old flame, simply want to have plans so you’re not sitting at home by yourself, or think it’s easier than going on a date with someone new. But remember, there’s a reason why you’re no longer together. Whether you or your ex were the one to end the relationship, if there’s no intention of getting back together, either of you may develop false hope or end up disappointed if the date doesn’t lead to something more. Plus, if you don’t want to be alone on Valentine’s Day, you’ve always got your girls to turn to.

3. Make it a “Galentine’s Day”

Get your fabulous single friends together to have some fun. You can make it a day of pampering at the spa, go out for drinks, host a dinner party, or catch a movie. It’s all about celebrating your independence, nurturing your friendships, and having a great night!

4. Take a break from dating apps

Endlessly swiping through dating profiles can be exhausting and frustrating. Don’t make this day about trying to find someone to make you happy or complete. Focus on cultivating your own happiness and living your best life. This brings me to my next suggestion…

5. Do something special for yourself

Today is all about you. It’s a day to do whatever your little heart desires. You can get a new haircut, get your nails done, book a facial or massage, buy yourself a new piece of jewelry, attend a yoga class, or take a relaxing bubble bath. The possibilities are endless!

You won’t be single forever. Embrace this time of your life as an opportunity to learn to love yourself. The right person will come along when the time is right. But hopefully, you’ll be too busy enjoying yourself to worry about it in the meantime.

How are you spending your Valentine’s Day?
