Living Life From a Distance: Coping With COVID-19

Health and Wellness

As an introvert, I’ve always enjoyed spending time at home. But now that we’ve been forced to self-quarantine due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), endless days and nights at home have become so monotonous. But I just keep telling myself, this is my safe place (even more so now).

Living life from a distance

I’ve been working from home planted in front of a computer all day with the sunlight taunting me from my window. When my workday ends and I get the chance to step outside, it feels surreal. It’s as if I’m one of the only people left on earth searching for other signs of life. While taking car rides to maintain my sanity, I shake my head in disbelief at anyone who isn’t practicing “social distancing.” These are the people who are making this situation worse for the rest of us. We must remember that staying home is the only way we can “flatten the curve.” We are lucky enough to have ways to stay connected to one another even if we can’t be face-to-face. Thank you, technology!

What can we learn from this?

I find it hard to watch the news or even go on Facebook these days because all I see is more bad news—another new case, another death. I keep thinking when will it end? When will our lives go back to normal? But maybe they will never be “normal” again. I can’t help but think this is a test; a horrible situation that will force us to reevaluate our lives. Will we become bitter and depressed? Or will we rise above and learn to appreciate the little things in life we’ve taken for granted?

Not all heroes wear capes

While a crisis like this can certainly bring out the worst in some people, it can also show us that there’s still good in this world. Just look at the medical professionals putting their lives on the line to save others. Then there are people performing random acts of kindness to help others in need. And let’s not forget those who are homeschooling their children, some while still having to work.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ -Mr. Rogers

We’ll get through this

While this is an extremely scary and difficult time for all of us, we won’t let COVID-19 defeat us. In the meantime, we must stay strong, do everything we can to stay safe, and think positive. We can’t let our minds go to that dark place. Just know there will be light at the end of this tunnel.
