Love Conquers All: Navigating Wedding Planning in the Face of COVID-19

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has the world completely up in arms. People are flocking to the stores in droves in search of toilet paper and hand sanitizer only to find endless shelves of emptiness. Who would’ve thought we’d ever see a day when toilet paper would become the Holy Grail? We’ve even been advised to practice “social distancing.” Introverts of the world rejoice! But in all seriousness, schools, restaurants/bars, movie theatres, and gyms have been shut down and people are losing their jobs. An 8 PM curfew has been imposed in the tri-state area and events are being canceled. Even one of the most important events in people’s lives―their wedding.

Many engaged couples have been forced to make the heartbreaking decision to postpone their nuptials out of concern for the safety of their guests and due to federal guidelines that recommend canceling gatherings of 10 or more people (lowered from the original recommendation of 250).

With a wedding of my own planned for July, I’m really hoping I don’t have to be one of those couples. It took me nearly 38 years to find the right person, and all I can think about is how the coronavirus pandemic may get in the way of my happily ever after.

As I sit here in self-quarantine, I keep wondering what if. What if we need to postpone our wedding? What if we can’t go on our honeymoon? My panic started while shopping for a bridesmaid dress for my sister. The bridal consultants were visibly stressed because several brides were there to inform them they needed to postpone their weddings. Thanks to the coronavirus, we also had a very limited selection of bridesmaid dresses that would be ready in time. None of which came in fuchsia―the color I’ve envisioned for my wedding since I was a teenager. The mandated curfew also forced me to reschedule my highly anticipated appointment to try on my wedding dress.

Planning a wedding is stressful enough. But instead of stressing over the guest list and seating arrangements, we’re dealing with a pandemic. While I’m really hoping things go back to normal before I plan to walk down the aisle, my heart breaks for the couples who don’t have more time on their side.

Although you may not be dealing with this particular situation, we have all been affected by the coronavirus in some way. Our heads are filled with fear and uncertainty. I know some people are dealing with way worse than worrying about their wedding, but I’m just here to share my story.

This all feels like a movie. How can this be real life? It really puts things into perspective though. Our lives can change in an instant. One day we’re going about our normal lives, and the next all hell breaks loose. It really shows you the little things in life we take for granted.  But this too shall pass. We will overcome this and be stronger for it. We must try our hardest to react with faith, not fear. Sending out virtual hugs to you all.
